All through the summer, your outdoor plants work hard for you, making your lawn an enviable place. In winter, it is important to properly ‘winterize’ your lawn and garden so that the next time round it can have healthy soil, lush grass, and happy plants. Proper care is also needed of your outdoor accessories like - your lawn equipment, gardening tools, and your lawn and garden décor as well.
When spring arrives, time spent in your gardening and landscaping efforts in the autumn would yield excellent results! To begin with, take up the easy jobs like storing all of your lawn and garden decor including fragile planters, gazing balls, and your deck furniture. It is advised that you clean all your unglazed terra cotta planters and place them in a protected storage area, as those left filled with soil outside will often break in the freezing temperatures. In autumn, look for your birdfeeders and begin stocking your pantry with ‘winter feeding’. The nutritious morsel would soon have many winged friends flocking to your feeders. As the birds need reliable food sources through the winter months, try to keep your feeders full throughout the winter. Planting of the spring-blooming bulbs is the best part of landscape chores in autumn. The beauty of the early spring landscape increases manifold with the presence of crocus, tulips, and daffodils. The job of raking leaves is a major job in the yard. These are extremely beneficial either in the compost pile or as direct mulch. A heavy layer of mulch can also be used to smother perennial flowers. Pruning of the trees, however, can be delayed till later in the winter. Perennial flowers and newly planted trees can be mulched when the ground freezes. For protection against wind damage, sunscald, and other winter injury, it is essential to wrap certain shrubs in burlap. Before you store it away for the long, cold winter, clean all your landscaping equipment. The machines to be washed with soap and water, the air filter needs to be cleaned, and the oil changed. Moreover, if you take time to sharpen the blades, you will find the first lawn-mowing job in the spring somewhat easier. A little spray oil applied to the blades helps in protecting the freshly sharpened blade. Even to other moving parts, such as cables and the throttle controls, the same oil can be applied. Last but by no means the least, It is important that all the water is drained from the garden hoses and the taps turned off. Insecticides, herbicides, and fertilizers should be stored in a safe storage area that will not freeze. Also make sure that none of these materials is kept within the easy reach of children and pets! |
